Spirit Bears around Vancouver, BC Canada

Spirit Bears roaming the streets of Vancouver

Over the summer there have been over 100 fibreglass bears distributed around the Lower Mainland of Vancouver. It's part of the "Kermode" Spirit Bears In The City project, designed to help charities raise money like the British Columbia Lions Society for Children with Disabilities. The bears will be sold off in October 2006.

The bear on the left is called Vancoubear and was located at the corner of Howe and Cordova in the downtown area, near Waterfront Station. It was painted by artist Fred Peters for Odlum Brown Ltd.

There has been debates locally if these fibreglass bears are works of art, or public eyesores. But in the end, they were eventually auctioned off and together raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I had seen lots of fibreglass bears and other figures in Europe, and I have heard also in other countries across the world. All in the name of raising money for charity. They are not meant to be permanent fixtures, as some locals fear. They inevitably are sold, and money going to people in need. It's a worthy cause.

This other bear, called Nazzy Bear, is named after Marcus Naslund who is the captain of our Vancouver Canucks hockey team. It is located near the Canada Place. The artist was Dean Lauze who painted it for Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment.
